Safe Routes to School is Coming
to
Fannin
Fannin school has been selected to participate in
the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program to take place
during the school years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. EPISD is working hard to
ensure the safety of children traveling to and from school and improve fitness
levels.
Goals:
* Increase the number of children who walk and bike to school.
* Follow the safest routes to walk and bike to school, and suggest safety
improvements to those routes.
* Develop fun ways to get more children to use those routes, and
recruit parents and neighbors to accompany children to school .
* Students in grades 3-5 will successfully complete a five day
bike training/testing during their Physical Education Class.
* 134 bicycles and helmets will be awarded per year to students in grades
3-5 who meet the criteria outlined in the student contract.

SRTS mission is to encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school. SRTS is designed to make bicycling and walking to school a safe transportaion option using projects and activities that improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution near elementary school. Forty seven elementary schools are participating in the two year SRTS Program with a total funding of $4.7 million.

*Build and maintain healthy bones and muscles;
*Reduce the risk of developing obesity and chronic diseases;
*Reduce feelings of depression and anxiety;
*Promote psychological well being; and
*Promote a healthy and active lifestyle
